Therefore, O chief amongst the protectors of religion, please fix some place for me where I can live permanently under the protection of your government.
Punishment and Reward of Kali
SB 1.17.37
For those who are wandering in the material universe, there is no more auspicious means of deliverance than what is aimed at in the direct devotional service of Lord Kṛṣṇa.
The Lord in the Heart
SB 2.2.33
Surrendered souls, even from groups leading sinful lives, such as women, the laborer class, the mountaineers and the Siberians, or even the birds and beasts, can also know about the science of Godhead and become liberated from the clutches of the illusory energy by surrendering unto the pure devotees of the Lord and by following in their footsteps in devotional service.
Scheduled Incarnations with Specific Functions
SB 2.7.46
The total energy of the mahat-tattva, in the form of the gigantic virÄá¹-rÅ«pa, divided Himself by Himself into the consciousness of the living entities, the life of activity, and self-identification, which are subdivided into one, ten and three respectively.
Creation of the Universal Form
SB 3.6.7
The planet earth continued: My dear Lord, You are the complete conductor of the material creation. You have created this cosmic manifestation and the three material qualities, and therefore You have created me, the planet earth, the resting place of all living entities. Yet You are always fully independent, my Lord. Now that You are present before me and ready to kill me with Your weapons, let me know where I should go to take shelter, and tell me who can give me protection.
Maharaja Prithu Becomes Angry at the Earth
SB 4.17.30
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu, is present in everyone’s heart as the Supersoul, and He is the proprietor of all planets and the enjoyer of the results of all sacrifices. He was personally present at the sacrifices made by King Pṛthu.
King Prithu's One Hundred Horse Sacrifices
SB 4.19.3
My Lord, due to Your illusory energy, all living beings in this material world have forgotten their real constitutional position, and out of ignorance they are always desirous of material happiness in the form of society, friendship and love. Therefore, please do not ask me to take some material benefits from You, but as a father, not waiting for the son’s demand, does everything for the benefit of the son, please bestow upon me whatever You think best for me.
Lord Vishnu's Appearance in the Sacrificial Arena of Maharaja Prithu
SB 4.20.31
My dear King, O protector of the citizens, henceforward be very careful to execute My orders and not be misled by anything. Anyone who lives in that way, simply carrying out My orders faithfully, will always find good fortune all over the world.
Lord Vishnu's Appearance in the Sacrificial Arena of Maharaja Prithu
SB 4.20.33
My dear respectable ladies and gentlemen, according to the authoritative statements of Å›Ästra, there must be a supreme authority who is able to award the respective benefits of our present activities. Otherwise, why should there be persons who are unusually beautiful and powerful both in this life and in the life after death?
Instructions by Maharaja Prithu
SB 4.21.27
The Supreme Personality of Godhead manifests Himself as one with the cause and effect within this body, but one who has transcended the illusory energy by deliberate consideration, which clears the misconception of a snake for a rope, can understand that the ParamÄtmÄ is eternally transcendental to the material creation and situated in pure internal energy. Thus the Lord is transcendental to all material contamination. Unto Him only must one surrender.
Prithu Maharaja's Meeting with the Four Kumaras
SB 4.22.38
Lord Śiva continued: Any person who is surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, the controller of everything — material nature as well as the living entity — is actually very dear to me.
Chanting the Song Sung by Lord Siva
SB 4.24.28
King Purañjana began to search for a suitable place to live, and thus he traveled all over the world. Even after a great deal of traveling, he could not find a place just to his liking. Finally he became morose and disappointed.
The Descriptions of the Characteristics of King Puranjana
SB 4.25.11
The great sage NÄrada continued: My dear King, once upon a time King Purañjana took up his great bow, and equipped with golden armor and a quiver of unlimited arrows and accompanied by eleven commanders, he sat on his chariot driven by five swift horses and went to the forest named Pañca-prastha. He took with him in that chariot two explosive arrows. The chariot itself was situated on two wheels and one revolving axle. On the chariot were three flags, one rein, one chariot driver, one sitting place, two poles to which the harness was fixed, five weapons and seven coverings. The chariot moved in five different styles, and five obstacles lay before it. All the decorations of the chariot were made of gold.
King Puranjana Goes to the Forest to Hunt, and His Queen Becomes Angry
SB 4.26.1-3
My dear brÄhmaṇa, there are contradictions between your instructions and those of my spiritual teachers who engaged me in fruitive activities. I now can understand the distinction between devotional service, knowledge and renunciation. I had some doubts about them, but you have now very kindly dissipated all these doubts. I can now understand how even the great sages are bewildered by the real purpose of life. Of course, there is no question of sense gratification.
Talks Between Narada and King Pracinabarhi
SB 4.29.57
You brothers are all of the same nature, being My devotees and obedient sons of your father. Similarly, that girl is also of the same type and is dedicated to all of you. Thus both the girl and you, the sons of PrÄcÄ«nabarhiá¹£at, are on the same platform, being united on a common principle.
The Activities of the Pracetas
SB 4.30.16
My dear Priyavrata, according to our association with different modes of material nature, the Supreme Personality of Godhead gives us our specific bodies and the happiness and distress we achieve. One must therefore remain situated as he is and be conducted by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, exactly as a blind man is led by a person who has eyes with which to see.
The Activities of Maharaja Priyavrata
SB 5.1.15
My transcendental body [sac-cid-Änanda-vigraha] looks exactly like a human form, but it is not a material human body. It is inconceivable. I am not forced by nature to accept a particular type of body; I take on a body by My own sweet will. My heart is also spiritual, and I always think of the welfare of My devotees. Therefore within My heart can be found the process of devotional service, which is meant for the devotees. Far from My heart have I abandoned irreligion [adharma] and nondevotional activities. They do not appeal to Me. Due to all these transcendental qualities, people generally pray to Me as Ṛṣabhadeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the best of all living entities.
Lord Rishabhadeva's Teachings to His Sons
SB 5.5.19
After performing the preliminaries of various sacrifices, MahÄrÄja Bharata offered the results in the name of religion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, VÄsudeva. In other words, he performed all the yajñas for the satisfaction of Lord VÄsudeva, Kṛṣṇa. MahÄrÄja Bharata thought that since the demigods were different parts of VÄsudeva’s body, He controls those who are explained in the Vedic mantras. By thinking in this way, MahÄrÄja Bharata was freed from all material contamination, such as attachment, lust and greed. When the priests were about to offer the sacrificial ingredients into the fire, MahÄrÄja Bharata expertly understood how the offering made to different demigods was simply an offering to the different limbs of the Lord. For instance, Indra is the arm of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and SÅ«rya [the sun] is His eye. Thus MahÄrÄja Bharata considered that the oblations offered to different demigods were actually offered unto the different limbs of Lord VÄsudeva.
The Activities of King Bharata
SB 5.7.6
He alone who is never afraid but who, on the contrary, gives complete shelter to all fearful persons can actually become a husband and protector. Therefore, my Lord, You are the only husband, and no one else can claim this position. If You were not the only husband, You would be afraid of others. Therefore persons learned in all Vedic literature accept only Your Lordship as everyone’s master, and they think no one else a better husband and protector than You.
The Prayers Offered to the Lord by the Residents of Jambudvipa
SB 5.18.20
The shameless husbands of lowborn śūdra women live exactly like animals, and therefore they have no good behavior, cleanliness or regulated life. After death, such persons are thrown into the hell called Pūyoda, where they are put into an ocean filled with pus, stool, urine, mucus, saliva and similar things. Śūdras who could not improve themselves fall into that ocean and are forced to eat those disgusting things.
A Description of the Hellish Planets
SB 5.26.23
Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« replied: My dear King, if before one’s next death whatever impious acts one has performed in this life with his mind, words and body are not counteracted through proper atonement according to the description of the Manu-saá¹hitÄ and other dharma-Å›Ästras, one will certainly enter the hellish planets after death and undergo terrible suffering, as I have previously described to you.
The History of the Life of Ajamila
SB 6.1.7
Although not having fully realized Kṛṣṇa, persons who have even once surrendered completely unto His lotus feet and who have become attracted to His name, form, qualities and pastimes are completely freed of all sinful reactions, for they have thus accepted the true method of atonement. Even in dreams, such surrendered souls do not see YamarÄja or his order carriers, who are equipped with ropes to bind the sinful.
The History of the Life of Ajamila
SB 6.1.19
NÄrada Muni delivered his instructions both to me, who was within the womb, and to my mother, who was engaged in rendering him service. Because he is naturally extremely kind to the fallen souls, being in a transcendental position, he gave instructions on religion and transcendental knowledge. These instructions were free from all material contamination.
What Prahlada Learned in the Womb
SB 7.7.15
My dear Lord, O supreme great, You have created this material world of sixteen constituents, but You are transcendental to their material qualities. In other words, these material qualities are under Your full control, and You are never conquered by them. Therefore the time element is Your representation. My Lord, O Supreme, no one can conquer You. As for me, however, I am being crushed by the wheel of time, and therefore I surrender fully unto You. Now kindly take me under the protection of Your lotus feet.
Prahlada Pacifies Lord Nrisimhadeva with Prayers
SB 7.9.22
My dear Lord of the Vaikuṇṭha planets, where there is no anxiety, my mind is extremely sinful and lusty, being sometimes so-called happy and sometimes so-called distressed. My mind is full of lamentation and fear, and it always seeks more and more money. Thus it has become most polluted and is never satisfied in topics concerning You. I am therefore most fallen and poor. In such a status of life, how shall I be able to discuss Your activities?
Prahlada Pacifies Lord Nrisimhadeva with Prayers
SB 7.9.39
Therefore, day by day, one who is actually aware of religious principles and is not heinously envious of poor animals should happily perform daily sacrifices and those for certain occasions with whatever food is available easily by the grace of the Lord.
Instructions for Civilized Human Beings
SB 7.15.11
The mind is always agitated by waves of acceptance and rejection. Therefore all the activities of the senses should be offered into the mind, which should be offered into one’s words. Then one’s words should be offered into the aggregate of all alphabets, which should be offered into the concise form oá¹kÄra. Oá¹kÄra should be offered into the point bindu, bindu into the vibration of sound, and that vibration into the life air. Then the living entity, who is all that remains, should be placed in Brahman, the Supreme. This is the process of sacrifice.
Instructions for Civilized Human Beings
SB 7.15.53
Now is the time to invoke the mode of goodness of the living entities who have accepted material bodies. The mode of goodness is meant to establish the Supreme Lord’s rule, which will maintain the existence of the creation. Therefore, this is the opportune moment to take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because He is naturally very kind and dear to the demigods, He will certainly bestow good fortune upon us.
The Demigods Appeal to the Lord for Protection
SB 8.5.23
O my Lord, I, who am considered to be the best of the demigods, and Lord BrahmÄ and the great ṛṣis, headed by MarÄ«ci, are born of the mode of goodness. Nonetheless, we are bewildered by Your illusory energy and cannot understand what this creation is. Aside from us, what is to be said of others, like the demons and human beings, who are in the base modes of material nature [rajo-guṇa and tamo-guṇa]? How will they know You?
The Mohini-murti Incarnation Bewilders Lord Siva
SB 8.12.10
This is the best process for pleasing the transcendental Supreme Personality of Godhead, known as Adhoká¹£aja. It is the best of all regulative principles, the best austerity, the best process of giving charity, and the best process of sacrifice.
Executing the Payo-vrata Process of Worship
SB 8.16.61
Neither all the demigods, nor the so-called gurus nor all other people, either independently or together, can offer mercy that equals even one ten-thousandth of Yours. Therefore I wish to take shelter of Your lotus feet.
Matsya, the Lord's Fish Incarnation
SB 8.24.49
As fire in the forest immediately burns to ashes an angry snake, so, by the previous order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His disc, the Sudarśana cakra, immediately burnt to ashes the created demon to protect the Lord’s devotee.
Ambarisha Maharaja Offended by Durvasa Muni
SB 9.4.48
O King, I do not wish to go down to the planet earth, for there the people in general will bathe in my water to cleanse themselves of the reactions of their sinful deeds. When all these sinful reactions accumulate in me, how shall I become free from them? You must consider this very carefully.
The Dynasty of Amsuman
SB 9.9.5
After saying this, Bhagīratha satisfied Lord Śiva by performing austerities. O King Parīkṣit, Lord Śiva was very quickly satisfied with Bhagīratha.
The Dynasty of Amsuman
SB 9.9.8
Taking the boat of Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet, my grandfather Arjuna and others crossed the ocean of the Battlefield of Kuruká¹£etra, in which such commanders as BhÄ«á¹£madeva resembled great fish that could very easily have swallowed them. By the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa, my grandfathers crossed this ocean, which was very difficult to cross, as easily as one steps over the hoofprint of a calf. Because my mother surrendered unto Lord Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet, the Lord, SudarÅ›ana-cakra in hand, entered her womb and saved my body, the body of the last remaining descendant of the Kurus and the PÄṇá¸avas, which was almost destroyed by the fiery weapon of AÅ›vatthÄmÄ. Lord ÅšrÄ« Kṛṣṇa, appearing within and outside of all materially embodied living beings by His own potency in the forms of eternal time — that is, as ParamÄtmÄ and as virÄá¹-rÅ«pa — gave liberation to everyone, either as cruel death or as life. Kindly enlighten me by describing His transcendental characteristics.
The Advent of Lord Krishna: Introduction
SB 10.1.5-7
All the boys would be differently engaged. Some boys blew their flutes, and others blew bugles made of horn. Some imitated the buzzing of the bumblebees, and others imitated the voice of the cuckoo. Some boys imitated flying birds by running after the birds’ shadows on the ground, some imitated the beautiful movements and attractive postures of the swans, some sat down with the ducks, sitting silently, and others imitated the dancing of the peacocks. Some boys attracted young monkeys in the trees, some jumped into the trees, imitating the monkeys, some made faces as the monkeys were accustomed to do, and others jumped from one branch to another. Some boys went to the waterfalls and crossed over the river, jumping with the frogs, and when they saw their own reflections on the water they would laugh. They would also condemn the sounds of their own echoes. In this way, all the cowherd boys used to play with Kṛṣṇa, who is the source of the Brahman effulgence for jñÄnÄ«s desiring to merge into that effulgence, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead for devotees who have accepted eternal servitorship, and who for ordinary persons is but another ordinary child. The cowherd boys, having accumulated the results of pious activities for many lives, were able to associate in this way with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How can one explain their great fortune?
The Killing of the Demon Aghasura
SB 10.12.7-11
RukmÄ« gave his granddaughter RocanÄ to his daughter’s son, Aniruddha, despite Rukmī’s relentless feud with Lord Hari. Although RukmÄ« considered this marriage irreligious, he wanted to please his sister, bound as he was by the ropes of affection.
Lord Balarama Slays Rukmi
SB 10.61.25
Devotion, direct experience of the Supreme Lord, and detachment from other things — these three occur simultaneously for one who has taken shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in the same way that pleasure, nourishment and relief from hunger come simultaneously and increasingly, with each bite, for a person engaged in eating.
