vidyÄ-vinaya-sampanne brÄhmaṇe gavi hastini Å›uni chaiva Å›vapÄke cha paṇá¸itÄḥ sama-darÅ›inaḥ [18]

sama-darÅ›inaḥ eva–Those who see with equanimity, who see Brahma, transcendence; vidyÄ-vinaya-sampanne–in a learned and humble; brÄhmaṇe–brÄhmaṇ; gavi–a cow; hastini–an elephant; Å›uni cha–and a dog; Å›vapake cha–or a chaṇá¸Äl (dog-eater or outcast); (kathyate)– (such seers) are to be known as; paṇá¸itÄḥ–truly learned. The enlightened souls see transcendence within all living beings, whether the humble and learned brÄhmaṇ, the cow, the elephant, the dog, or the dog-eater. Therefore, they are to be known as paṇá¸it—men of true wisdom.
