vyavasÄyena te 'nena
duá¹£kareṇa manasvinÄm
tapo-niá¹£á¹hena bhavatÄ
jito 'haá¹ diti-nandana
vyavasÄyena - by determination; te - your; anena - this; duá¹£kareṇa - difficult to perform; manasvinÄm - even for great sages and saintly persons; tapaḥ-niá¹£á¹hena - aimed at executing austerity; bhavatÄ - by you; jitaḥ - conquered; aham - I; diti-nandana - O son of Diti.
In regard to the word jitaḥ, ÅšrÄ«la Madhva Muni gives the following quotation from the Åšabda-nirṇaya: parÄbhÅ«taá¹ vaÅ›a-sthaá¹ ca jitabhid ucyate budhaiḥ. “If one comes under someone else’s control or is defeated by another, he is called jitaḥ.†HiraṇyakaÅ›ipu’s austerity was so great and wonderful that even Lord BrahmÄ agreed to be conquered by him.
