 udÄ«cyÄḥ - belonging to the north; sÄma-gÄḥ - the singer of the SÄma Veda; Å›iá¹£yÄḥ - the disciples; Äsan - there were; pañca-Å›atÄni - five hundred; vai - indeed; pauá¹£yañji-Ävantyayoḥ - of Pauá¹£yañji and Ä€vantya; ca - and; api - indeed; tÄn - they; ca - also; prÄcyÄn - easterners; pracaká¹£ate - are called.

The five hundred disciples of Pauá¹£yañji and Ä€vantya became known as the northern singers of the SÄma Veda, and in later times some of them also became known as eastern singers.
