sa cÄhedam aho kaṣṭaá¹
vá¹›thÄtmÄ me 'nutÄpitaḥ
na dharmÄya na kÄmÄya
yasyÄrthÄyÄsa Ä«dṛśaḥ

 saḥ - he; ca - and; aha - spoke; idam - this; aho - alas; kaṣṭam - the painful misfortune; vá¹›thÄ - vainly; ÄtmÄ - the self; me - my; anutÄpitaḥ - distressed; na - not; dharmÄya - for religiosity; na - nor; kÄmÄya - for sense gratification; yasya - whose; artha - for wealth; ÄyÄsaḥ - labor; Ä«dṛśaḥ - such as this.

The brÄhmaṇa spoke as follows: O what great misfortune! I have simply tormented myself uselessly, struggling so hard for money that was not even intended for religiosity or material enjoyment.
