evam - thus; nirbhartsitÄ - scolded; bhÄ«tÄ - afraid; yamunÄ - the presiding goddess of the river YamunÄ; yadu-nandanam - to the beloved descendant of Yadu, Lord BalarÄma; uvÄca - spoke; cakitÄ - trembling; vÄcam - words; patitÄ - fallen; pÄdayoḥ - at His feet; ná¹›pa - O King (ParÄ«ká¹£it).
[Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« continued:] Thus scolded by the Lord, O King, the frightened river-goddess YamunÄ came and fell at the feet of ÅšrÄ« BalarÄma, the beloved descendant of Yadu. Trembling, she spoke to Him the following words.
According to ÅšrÄ«la JÄ«va GosvÄmÄ«, the goddess who appeared before Lord BalarÄma is an expansion of ÅšrÄ«matÄ« KÄlindÄ«, one of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s queens in DvÄrakÄ. ÅšrÄ«la JÄ«va GosvÄmÄ« calls her a “shadow†of KÄlindÄ«, and ÅšrÄ«la ViÅ›vanÄtha CakravartÄ« confirms that she is an expansion of KÄlindÄ«, not KÄlindÄ« herself. ÅšrÄ«la JÄ«va GosvÄmÄ« also gives evidence from ÅšrÄ« Hari-vaá¹Å›a — in the statement pratyuvÄcÄrṇava-vadhÅ«m — that Goddess YamunÄ is the wife of the ocean. The Hari-vaá¹Å›a therefore also refers to her as sÄgarÄá¹…ganÄ.
