 peá¹­Äá¹…gi - shirt and coat; gÄya - on the body; kare - performs; daṇá¸avat-namaskÄra - offering of obeisances; govinda kahe - Govinda said; Å›rÄ«kÄnta - my dear ÅšrÄ«kÄnta; Äge - first; peá¹­Äá¹…gi utÄra - take off your shirt and coat.

When ÅšrÄ«kÄnta offered obeisances to the Lord, he was still wearing his shirt and coat. Therefore Govinda told him, “My dear ÅšrÄ«kÄnta, first take off these garments.â€

Purport

One is forbidden to enter the Deity room or offer anything to the Deity while wearing a shirt or coat. In the tantras it is said:

vastreṇÄvá¹›ta-dehas tu yo naraḥ praṇamed dharim
Å›vitrÄ« bhavati mÅ«á¸hÄtmÄ sapta janmÄni bhÄvini

“Anyone who offers respects and obeisances to the Deity while wearing garments on the upper portion of his body is condemned to be a leper for seven births.â€
