ātmānam–The living being; uddharet–must be delivered from the bondage of the material world; ātmanā–by the (detached) mind; ātmānam–and the living being; na avasādayet–must not be made to fall down into the bondage of the material world; (ātmanā)–by the mind (enchanted by sense objects); hi–since; ātmā eva–this very mind; bandhuḥ–is the friend; ātmānaḥ–of the living being; ātmā eva–and this very mind; ripuḥ–is the enemy; ātmānaḥ–of the living being. One must elevate himself by the mind, not degrade himself by the mind; for the mind is sometimes the friend of the living being, and in another situation that very mind is his enemy.
