There are four stages of the renounced order of life — kuá¹Ä«caka, bahÅ«daka, parivrÄjakÄcÄrya and paramahaá¹sa. Herein, ÅšrÄ«mad-BhÄgavatam considers the paramahaá¹sas among the sannyÄsÄ«s. The MÄyÄvÄdÄ« impersonalist sannyÄsÄ«s cannot attain the paramahaá¹sa stage. This is because of their impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth. Brahmeti paramÄtmeti bhagavÄn iti Å›abdyate. The Absolute Truth is perceived in three stages, of which bhagavÄn, or realization of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is meant for the paramahaá¹sas. Indeed, ÅšrÄ«mad-BhÄgavatam itself is meant for the paramahaá¹sas (paramo nirmatsarÄṇÄá¹ satÄm). Unless one is in the paramahaá¹sa stage, he is not eligible to understand the ÅšrÄ«mad-BhÄgavatam. For paramahaá¹sas, or sannyÄsÄ«s in the Vaiṣṇava order, preaching is the first duty. To preach, such sannyÄsÄ«s may accept the symbols of sannyÄsa, such as the daṇá¸a and kamaṇá¸alu, or sometimes they may not. Generally the Vaiṣṇava sannyÄsÄ«s, being paramahaá¹sas, are automatically called bÄbÄjÄ«s, and they do not carry a kamaṇá¸alu or daṇá¸a. Such a sannyÄsÄ« is free to accept or reject the marks of sannyÄsa. His only thought is “Where is there an opportunity to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness?†Sometimes the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement sends its representative sannyÄsÄ«s to foreign countries where the daṇá¸a and kamaṇá¸alu are not very much appreciated. We send our preachers in ordinary dress to introduce our books and philosophy. Our only concern is to attract people to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. We may do this in the dress of sannyÄsÄ«s or in the regular dress of gentlemen. Our only concern is to spread interest in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
