इन्द्र उवाच
स्त्रीभूद्रुमजलैरेनो विश्वरूपवधोद्भवम् ।
विभक्तमनुगृह्णद्भिर्वृत्रहत्यां क्व मार्ज्म्यहम् ॥५॥

strī-bhū-druma-jalair eno
viśvarūpa-vadhodbhavam
vibhaktam anugṛhṇadbhir
vá¹›tra-hatyÄá¹ kva mÄrjmy aham

 indraḥ uvÄca - King Indra replied; strÄ« - by women; bhÅ« - the earth; druma - the trees; jalaiḥ - and water; enaḥ - this (sin); viÅ›varÅ«pa - of ViÅ›varÅ«pa; vadha - from the killing; udbhavam - produced; vibhaktam - divided; anugá¹›hṇadbhiḥ - showing their favor (to me); vá¹›tra-hatyÄm - the killing of Vá¹›tra; kva - how; mÄrjmi - shall become free from; aham - I.

King Indra replied: When I killed ViÅ›varÅ«pa, I received extensive sinful reactions, but I was favored by the women, land, trees and water, and therefore I was able to divide the sin among them. But now if I kill Vá¹›trÄsura, another brÄhmaṇa, how shall I free myself from the sinful reactions?
