yadÄ - when; abhiá¹£iktaḥ - appointed; daká¹£aḥ - Daká¹£a; tu - but; brahmaá¹‡Ä - by BrahmÄ; parameá¹£á¹hinÄ - the supreme teacher; prajÄpatÄ«nÄm - of the PrajÄpatis; sarveá¹£Äm - of all; Ädhipatye - as the chief; smayaḥ - puffed up; abhavat - he became.
Although he was envious and was inimical towards Lord Åšiva, Daká¹£a was appointed the chief of all PrajÄpatis. That was the cause of his excessive pride.
