tat kardamÄÅ›rama-padaá¹
sarasvatyÄ pariÅ›ritam
svayambhūḥ sÄkam ṛṣibhir
marÄ«cy-Ädibhir abhyayÄt
tat - that; kardama - of Kardama; ÄÅ›rama-padam - to the place of the hermitage; sarasvatyÄ - by the River SarasvatÄ«; pariÅ›ritam - surrounded; svayambhūḥ - BrahmÄ (the self-born); sÄkam - along with; ṛṣibhiḥ - the sages; marÄ«ci - the great sage MarÄ«ci; Ädibhiḥ - and others; abhyayÄt - he came there.
BrahmÄ is called SvayambhÅ« because he is not born of any material father and mother. He is the first living creature and is born from the lotus which grows from the abdomen of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, GarbhodakaÅ›ÄyÄ« Viṣṇu. Therefore he is called SvayambhÅ«, self-born.
