devatÄḥ prabhayÄ yÄ yÄ
dīvyan pramukhato 'sṛjat
te ahÄrá¹£ur devayanto
visṛṣá¹Äá¹ tÄá¹ prabhÄm ahaḥ
devatÄḥ - the demigods; prabhayÄ - with the glory of light; yÄḥ yÄḥ - those who; dÄ«vyan - shining; pramukhataḥ - chiefly; asá¹›jat - created; te - they; ahÄrá¹£uḥ - took possession of; devayantaḥ - being active; visṛṣá¹Äm - separated; tÄm - that; prabhÄm - effulgent form; ahaḥ - daytime.
Demons were born from the creation of night, and the demigods were born from the creation of day. In other words, demons like the Yaká¹£as and RÄká¹£asas are born of the quality of ignorance, and demigods are born of the quality of goodness.
