यस्तु तत्र पुमान्सोऽभून्मनुः स्वायम्भुवः स्वराट् ।
स्त्री यासीच्छतरूपाख्या महिष्यस्य महात्मनः ॥५४॥

strÄ« yÄsÄ«c chatarÅ«pÄkhyÄ
mahiá¹£y asya mahÄtmanaḥ

 yaḥ - one who; tu - but; tatra - there; pumÄn - the male; saḥ - he; abhÅ«t - became; manuḥ - the father of mankind; svÄyambhuvaḥ - of the name SvÄyambhuva; sva-rÄá¹­ - fully independent; strÄ« - the woman;  - one who; ÄsÄ«t - there was; Å›atarÅ«pÄ - of the name ÅšatarÅ«pÄ; ÄkhyÄ - known as; mahiṣī - the queen; asya - of him; mahÄtmanaḥ - the great soul.

Out of them, the one who had the male form became known as the Manu named SvÄyambhuva, and the woman became known as ÅšatarÅ«pÄ, the queen of the great soul Manu.
