 Å›rÄ«-Å›aunakaḥ uvÄca - ÅšrÄ« Åšaunaka Ṛṣi said; paila-Ädibhiḥ - by Paila and others; vyÄsa-Å›iá¹£yaiḥ - the disciples of ÅšrÄ«la VyÄsadeva; veda-ÄcÄryaiḥ - the standard authorities of the Vedas; mahÄ-Ätmabhiḥ - whose intelligence was very great; vedÄḥ - the Vedas; ca - and; kathitÄḥ - spoken; vyastÄḥ - divided; etat - this; saumya - O gentle SÅ«ta; abhidhehi - please narrate; naḥ - to us.

Åšaunaka Ṛṣi said: O gentle SÅ«ta, please narrate to us how Paila and the other greatly intelligent disciples of ÅšrÄ«la VyÄsadeva, who are known as the standard authorities of Vedic wisdom, spoke and edited the Vedas.
