ātmā hy ekaḼ svayaᚁ-jyotir
nityo 'nyo nirguṇo guṇaiḥ
ātma-sṛṣṭais tat-kṛteṣu
bhōteᚣu bahudheyate

 Ätmā - the Supreme Soul; hi - indeed; ekaḼ - one; svayam-jyotiḼ - self-luminous; nityaḼ - eternal; anyaḼ - distinct (from the material energy); nirguṇaḼ - free from material qualities; guṇaiḼ - by the modes; Ätma - from itself; sṛṣṭaiḼ - created; tat - in their; kṛteᚣu - products; bhĹŤteᚣu - material entities; bahudhā - manifold; ÄŤyate - it appears.


Text

The supreme spirit, Paramātmā, is indeed one. He is self-luminous and eternal, transcendental and devoid of material qualities. But through the agency of the very modes He has created, the one Supreme Truth manifests as many among the expansions of those modes.
