ruditam anuniśamya tatra gopyo
bhṛśam anutapta-dhiyo 'śru-pūrṇa-mukhyaḥ
rurudur anupalabhya nanda-sÅ«nuá¹
pavana upÄrata-pÄmÅ›u-vará¹£a-vege
ruditam - mother YaÅ›odÄ, crying pitifully; anuniÅ›amya - after hearing; tatra - there; gopyaḥ - the other ladies, the gopÄ«s; bhṛśam - highly; anutapta - lamenting sympathetically after mother YaÅ›odÄ; dhiyaḥ - with such feelings; aÅ›ru-pÅ«rṇa-mukhyaḥ - and the other gopÄ«s, their faces full of tears; ruruduḥ - they were crying; anupalabhya - without finding; nanda-sÅ«num - the son of Nanda MahÄrÄja, Kṛṣṇa; pavane - when the whirlwind; upÄrata - had ceased; pÄmÅ›u-vará¹£a-vege - its force of showering dust.
When the force of the dust storm and the winds subsided, YaÅ›odÄ’s friends, the other gopÄ«s, approached mother YaÅ›odÄ, hearing her pitiful crying. Not seeing Kṛṣṇa present, they too felt very much aggrieved and joined mother YaÅ›odÄ in crying, their eyes full of tears.
This attachment of the gopÄ«s to Kṛṣṇa is wonderful and transcendental. The center of all the activities of the gopÄ«s was Kṛṣṇa. When Kṛṣṇa was there they were happy, and when Kṛṣṇa was not there, they were unhappy. Thus when mother YaÅ›odÄ was lamenting Kṛṣṇa’s absence, the other ladies also began to cry.
