rudantam - crying; sutam - son; ÄdÄya - picking up; yaÅ›odÄ - mother YaÅ›odÄ; graha-Å›aá¹…kitÄ - fearing some bad planet; ká¹›ta-svastyayanam - immediately performed a ritualistic ceremony for good fortune; vipraiḥ - by calling all the brÄhmaṇas; sÅ«ktaiḥ - by Vedic hymns; stanam - her breast; apÄyayat - made the child suck.
Whenever there is some danger or some inauspicious occurrence, it is the custom of Vedic civilization to have qualified brÄhmaṇas immediately chant Vedic hymns to counteract it. Mother YaÅ›odÄ did this properly and allowed the baby to suck her breast.
