tam anvadhÄvad govindo
yatra yatra sa dhÄvati
jihÄ«rá¹£us tac-chiro-ratnaá¹
tasthau rakṣan striyo balaḥ
tam - after him; anvadhÄvat - ran; govindaḥ - Lord Kṛṣṇa; yatra yatra - wherever; saḥ - he; dhÄvati - was running; jihÄ«rá¹£uḥ - desiring to take away; tat - his; Å›iraḥ - upon the head; ratnam - the jewel; tasthau - stood; raká¹£an - protecting; striyaḥ - the women; balaḥ - Lord BalarÄma.
Lord Govinda chased the demon wherever he ran, eager to take his crest jewel. Meanwhile Lord BalarÄma stayed with the women to protect them.
ÅšrÄ«la ViÅ›vanÄtha CakravartÄ« explains that the women were fatigued from being driven away, and thus Lord BalarÄma protected them and consoled them as they rested. Meanwhile Lord Kṛṣṇa went after the demon.
