Chapter Summary

A summary of the ninth chapter is given by ÅšrÄ«la Bhaktivinoda ṬhÄkura. After leaving VidyÄnagara, ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu visited such places of pilgrimage as GautamÄ«-gaá¹…gÄ, MallikÄrjuna, Ahovala-ná¹›siá¹ha, Siddhavaá¹­a, Skanda-ká¹£etra, Trimaá¹­ha, Vá¹›ddhakÄśī, Bauddha-sthÄna, Tirupati, Tirumala, PÄnÄ-ná¹›siá¹ha, Åšiva-kÄñcÄ«, Viṣṇu-kÄñcÄ«, TrikÄla-hasti, Vá¹›ddhakola, ÅšiyÄlÄ«-bhairavÄ«, the KÄverÄ« River and Kumbhakarṇa-kapÄla.Finally the Lord went to ÅšrÄ« Raá¹…ga-ká¹£etra, where He converted a brÄhmaṇa named Veá¹…kaá¹­a Bhaá¹­á¹­a, who, along with his family, took up devotional service to Kṛṣṇa. After leaving ÅšrÄ« Raá¹…ga, Caitanya MahÄprabhu reached Ṛṣabha-parvata, where He met ParamÄnanda PurÄ«, who later arrived at JagannÄtha PurÄ«. Lord ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu then proceeded farther, arriving at Setubandha RÄmeÅ›vara. At ÅšrÄ« Åšaila-parvata, the Lord met Lord Åšiva and his wife DurgÄ in the dress of a brÄhmaṇa and brÄhmaṇī. From there He went to KÄmakoṣṭhÄ«-purÄ« and later arrived at southern MathurÄ. A brÄhmaṇa devotee of Lord RÄmacandra talked with Him. Then the Lord took His bath in the river Ká¹›tamÄlÄ. On the hill known as Mahendra-Å›aila, the Lord saw ParaÅ›urÄma. Then the Lord went to Setubandha and took His bath at Dhanus-tÄ«rtha. He also visited RÄmeÅ›vara, where He collected some papers connected with SÄ«tÄdevÄ«, whose illusory form had been kidnapped by RÄvaṇa. The Lord next visited the places known as PÄṇá¸ya-deÅ›a, the TÄmraparṇī River, Naya-tripati, Ciyaá¸atalÄ, Tila-kÄñcÄ«, Gajendra-moká¹£aṇa, PÄnÄgaá¸i, CÄmtÄpura, ÅšrÄ« Vaikuṇṭha, Malaya-parvata and KanyÄ-kumÄrÄ«. The Lord then confronted the Bhaá¹­á¹­athÄris at MallÄra-deÅ›a and saved KÄlÄ KṛṣṇadÄsa from their clutches. The Lord also collected the Brahma-saá¹hitÄ, fifth chapter, on the banks of the PayasvinÄ« River. He then visited PayasvinÄ«, Śṛṅgavera-purÄ«-maá¹­ha and Matsya-tÄ«rtha. At the village of Uá¸upÄ« He saw the GopÄla Deity installed by ÅšrÄ« MadhvÄcÄrya. He then defeated the TattvavÄdÄ«s in Å›Ästric conversation. The Lord next visited Phalgu-tÄ«rtha, TritakÅ«pa, PañcÄpsarÄ, SÅ«rpÄraka and KolÄpura. At PÄṇá¸arapura the Lord received news from ÅšrÄ« Raá¹…ga PurÄ« that Åšaá¹…karÄraṇya (ViÅ›varÅ«pa) had disappeared there. He then went to the banks of the Kṛṣṇa-veṇvÄ River, where He collected from among the Vaiṣṇava brÄhmaṇas a book written by Bilvamaá¹…gala ṬhÄkura, ÅšrÄ« Kṛṣṇa-karṇÄmá¹›ta. The Lord then visited the TÄpÄ« River, MÄhiá¹£matÄ«-pura, the NarmadÄ River and ṚṣyamÅ«ka-parvata. He entered Daṇá¸akÄraṇya and liberated seven palm trees. From there He visited a place known as PampÄ-sarovara and visited Pañcavaá¹­Ä«, NÄsika, Brahmagiri and also the source of the GodÄvarÄ« River, KuÅ›Ävarta. Thus the Lord visited almost all the holy places in South India. He finally returned to JagannÄtha PurÄ« by taking the same route, after visiting VidyÄnagara again.
