bhadra karÄÃ±Ä tÄá¹…re gaá¹…gÄ-snÄna karÄila
Å›ekhara ÄniyÄ tÄá¹…re nÅ«tana vastra dila
bhadra karÄÃ±Ä - making gentle; tÄá¹…re - him; gaá¹…gÄ-snÄna - bathing in the Ganges; karÄila - caused to do; Å›ekhara - CandraÅ›ekhara; ÄniyÄ - bringing; tÄá¹…re - to him; nÅ«tana - new; vastra - clothing; dila - delivered.
CandraÅ›ekhara then made SanÄtana GosvÄmÄ« look like a gentleman. He took him to bathe in the Ganges, and afterwards he brought him a new set of clothes.
The words bhadra karÄÃ±Ä are significant in this verse. Due to his long hair, mustache and beard, SanÄtana GosvÄmÄ« looked like a daraveÅ›a, or hippie. Since ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu did not like SanÄtana GosvÄmī’s hippie features, he immediately asked CandraÅ›ekhara to get him shaved clean. If anyone with long hair or a beard wants to join this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement and live with us, he must similarly shave himself clean. The followers of ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu consider long hair objectionable.
SanÄtana GosvÄmÄ« was saved from a hellish condition (MahÄraurava) by the grace of ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu. MahÄraurava is a hell wherein animal killers are placed. In this regard, refer to ÅšrÄ«mad-BhÄgavatam (5.26.10-12).
