Purport

The Lord’s vilÄsa expansions are described in the following verse from the Laghu-bhÄgavatÄmá¹›ta (1.15):

svarÅ«pam anyÄkÄraá¹ yat tasya bhÄti vilÄsataḥ
prÄyeṇÄtma-samaá¹ Å›aktyÄ sa vilÄso nigadyate

“When the Lord displays numerous forms with different features by His inconceivable potency, such forms are called vilÄsa-vigrahas.â€

The Lord’s svÄá¹Å›a expansions are also described in the Laghu-bhÄgavatÄmá¹›ta (1.17):

tÄdṛśo nyÅ«na-Å›aktiá¹ yo vyanakti svÄá¹Å›a Ä«ritaḥ
saá¹…kará¹£aṇÄdir matsyÄdir yathÄ tat-tat-svadhÄmasu

When a form of Kṛṣṇa is nondifferent from the original form but is less important and exhibits less potency, it is called svÄá¹Å›a. Examples of svÄá¹Å›a expansions can be found in the quadruple forms of the Lord residing in Their respective places, beginning with Saá¹…kará¹£aṇa, VÄsudeva, Pradyumna and Aniruddha, and also in the puruá¹£a-avatÄras, lÄ«lÄ-avatÄras, manvantara-avatÄras and yuga-avatÄras.
