Purport

In DvÄrakÄ, Lord Kṛṣṇa had eighteen mothers — DevakÄ«, Rohiṇī and others. Besides these was His foster mother, YaÅ›odÄ, in Vá¹›ndÄvana. Lord Kṛṣṇa also had many uncles. As stated by ÅšrÄ«la RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« in his Bá¹›hat ÅšrÄ« ÅšrÄ« RÄdhÄ-kṛṣṇa-gaṇoddeÅ›a-dÄ«pikÄ (32), upanando ’bhinandaÅ› ca pitá¹›vyau pÅ«rva-jau pituḥ: “The elder brothers of Nanda MahÄrÄja were Upananda and Abhinanda.†Similarly, in the same verse the names of the younger brothers of Nanda MahÄrÄja are given: pitá¹›vyau tu kanÄ«yÄá¹sau syÄtÄá¹ sannanda-nandanau. “Sannanda and Nandana [also known as Sunanda and PÄṇá¸ava] were the younger brothers of Kṛṣṇa’s father, Nanda MahÄrÄja.†ŚrÄ« Kṛṣṇa’s maternal uncles are also described in this book (in verse 46): yaÅ›odhara-yaÅ›odeva-sudevÄdyÄs tu mÄtulÄḥ. “YaÅ›odhara, YaÅ›odeva and Sudeva were the maternal uncles of Kṛṣṇa.†Also mentioned in the RÄdhÄ-kṛṣṇa-gaṇoddeÅ›a-dÄ«pikÄ (38) are Kṛṣṇa’s uncles who were the husbands of Nanda MahÄrÄja’s sisters: mahÄnÄ«laḥ sunÄ«laÅ› ca ramaṇÄv etayoḥ kramÄt. “MahÄnÄ«la and SunÄ«la are the husbands of Kṛṣṇa’s aunts.â€
