puruá¹£aḥ–A person; na aÅ›nute–cannot attain; naiá¹£karmyam–to the state of spiritual consciousness beyond material activity; anÄrambhÄt–by refraining from; karmaṇÄm–(scripturally prescribed) actions; na samadhigachchhati–and he cannot attain; siddhim–fulfillment, perfection; sannyasanÄt eva cha–by renunciation alone. One cannot attain freedom from action by refraining from action. Nor can one attain fulfillment by renunciation alone.
