Those who are in the modes of passion and ignorance worship those in the same category — namely the forefathers, other living beings and the demigods who are in charge of cosmic activities — for they are urged by a desire to be materially benefited with women, wealth, power and progeny. Divinity and Divine Service |
| SB 1.2.27 |
Who else but the gross materialists will neglect such transcendental thought and take to the nonpermanent names only, seeing the mass of people fallen in the river of suffering as the consequence of accruing the result of their own work? The Lord in the Heart |
| SB 2.2.7 |
One who desires to be absorbed in the impersonal brahmajyoti effulgence should worship the master of the Vedas [Lord BrahmÄ or Bá¹›haspati, the learned priest], one who desires powerful sex should worship the heavenly King, Indra, and one who desires good progeny should worship the great progenitors called the PrajÄpatis. One who desires good fortune should worship DurgÄdevÄ«, the superintendent of the material world. One desiring to be very powerful should worship fire, and one who aspires only after money should worship the Vasus. One should worship the Rudra incarnations of Lord Åšiva if he wants to be a great hero. One who wants a large stock of grains should worship Aditi. One who desires to attain the heavenly planets should worship the sons of Aditi. One who desires a worldly kingdom should worship ViÅ›vadeva, and one who wants to be popular with the general mass of population should worship the SÄdhya demigod. One who desires a long span of life should worship the demigods known as the AÅ›vinÄ«-kumÄras, and a person desiring a strongly built body should worship the earth. One who desires stability in his post should worship the horizon and the earth combined. One who desires to be beautiful should worship the beautiful residents of the Gandharva planet, and one who desires a good wife should worship the ApsarÄs and the Urvaśī society girls of the heavenly kingdom. One who desires domination over others should worship Lord BrahmÄ, the head of the universe. One who desires tangible fame should worship the Personality of Godhead, and one who desires a good bank balance should worship the demigod Varuṇa. If one desires to be a greatly learned man he should worship Lord Åšiva, and if one desires a good marital relation he should worship the chaste goddess UmÄ, the wife of Lord Åšiva. Pure Devotional Service: The Change in Heart |
| SB 2.3.2-7 |
A person who has broader intelligence, whether he be full of all material desire, without any material desire, or desiring liberation, must by all means worship the supreme whole, the Personality of Godhead. Pure Devotional Service: The Change in Heart |
| SB 2.3.10 |
Such persons are ever bereft of devotional service due to being too attached to sense gratification, and therefore, although they perform various kinds of sacrifices and take great vows to satisfy the demigods and forefathers, they are not interested in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, devotional service. Entanglement in Fruitive Activities |
| SB 3.32.2 |
My dear Vidura, carrier of bows and arrows, all the demigods who were performing the sacrifice took their bath at the confluence of the Ganges and the YamunÄ after completing the yajña performance. Such a bath is called avabhá¹›tha-snÄna. After thus becoming purified in heart, they departed for their respective abodes. Daksha Curses Lord Siva |
| SB 4.2.35 |
You are all devotees of the Lord, and as such I appreciate that you are as respectable as the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. I know in this way that the devotees also respect me and that I am dear to them. Thus no one can be as dear to the devotees as I am. Chanting the Song Sung by Lord Siva |
| SB 4.24.30 |
Despite the cultivation of Vedic knowledge, which is unlimited, and the worship of different demigods by the symptoms of Vedic mantras, demigod worship does not help one to understand the supreme powerful Personality of Godhead. Talks Between Narada and King Pracinabarhi |
| SB 4.29.45 |
Dear Lord, by virtue of a moment’s association with Lord Śiva, who is very dear to You and who is Your most intimate friend, we were fortunate to attain You. You are the most expert physician, capable of treating the incurable disease of material existence. On account of our great fortune, we have been able to take shelter at Your lotus feet. The Activities of the Pracetas |
| SB 4.30.38 |
My dear Lord, You automatically fulfill all the desires of a woman who worships Your lotus feet in pure love. However, if a woman worships Your lotus feet for a particular purpose, You also quickly fulfill her desires, but in the end she becomes broken-hearted and laments. Therefore one need not worship Your lotus feet for some material benefit. The Prayers Offered to the Lord by the Residents of Jambudvipa |
| SB 5.18.21 |
[This is the mantra by which the inhabitants of Plakṣadvīpa worship the Supreme Lord.] Let us take shelter of the sun-god, who is a reflection of Lord Viṣṇu, the all-expanding Supreme Personality of Godhead, the oldest of all persons. Viṣṇu is the only worshipable Lord. He is the Vedas, He is religion, and He is the origin of all auspicious and inauspicious results. Studying the Structure of the Universe |
| SB 5.20.5 |
A pure devotee who is fully accomplished in the science of devotional service will never instruct a foolish person to engage in fruitive activities for material enjoyment, not to speak of helping him in such activities. Such a devotee is like an experienced physician, who never encourages a patient to eat food injurious to his health, even if the patient desires it. Appearance of the Demon Vritrasura |
| SB 6.9.50 |
O Lord, O Supreme, unintelligent persons who thirst for sense enjoyment and who worship various demigods are no better than animals in the human form of life. Because of their animalistic propensities, they fail to worship Your Lordship, and instead they worship the insignificant demigods, who are but small sparks of Your glory. With the destruction of the entire universe, including the demigods, the benedictions received from the demigods also vanish, just like the nobility when a king is no longer in power. King Citraketu Meets the Supreme Lord |
| SB 6.16.38 |
A servant who desires material profits from his master is certainly not a qualified servant or pure devotee. Similarly, a master who bestows benedictions upon his servant because of a desire to maintain a prestigious position as master is also not a pure master. Prahlada, the Best Among Exalted Devotees |
| SB 7.10.5 |
ÅšrÄ« Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« continued: When the King of the elephants was describing the supreme authority, without mentioning any particular person, he did not invoke the demigods, headed by Lord BrahmÄ, Lord Åšiva, Indra and Candra. Thus none of them approached him. However, because Lord Hari is the Supersoul, Puruá¹£ottama, the Personality of Godhead, He appeared before Gajendra. Gajendra's Prayers of Surrender |
| SB 8.3.30 |
O greatest of all rulers, your actual identity is impossible for us to understand. As far as we can see, your presence brings flourishing happiness to everyone. Beyond this, no one can appreciate your activities. We can see this much, and nothing more. Lord Siva Saves the Universe by Drinking Poison |
| SB 8.7.35 |
My dear son, I am not yet satisfied in my sexual desires. But if you are kind to me, you can take the old age given by your maternal grandfather, and I may take your youth so that I may enjoy life for a few years more. King Yayati Regains His Youth |
| SB 9.18.39 |
King Rantideva had no ambition to enjoy material benefits from the demigods. He offered them obeisances, but because he was factually attached to Lord Viṣṇu, VÄsudeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he fixed his mind at Lord Viṣṇu’s lotus feet. The Dynasty of Bharata; |
| SB 9.21.16 |
By sacrifices of animals, ordinary human beings will worship you gorgeously, with various paraphernalia, because you are supreme in fulfilling the material desires of everyone. Prayers by the Demigods for Lord Krishna in the Womb |
| SB 10.2.10 |
Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« said: O King ParÄ«ká¹£it, because the two sons of Kuvera had been elevated to the association of Lord Åšiva, of which they were very much proud, they were allowed to wander in a garden attached to KailÄsa Hill, on the bank of the MandÄkinÄ« River. Taking advantage of this, they used to drink a kind of liquor called VÄruṇī. Accompanied by women singing after them, they would wander in that garden of flowers, their eyes always rolling in intoxication. Deliverance of the Yamala-arjuna Trees |
| SB 10.10.2-3 |
Because it is karma that causes the conditioned living entity to accept and then give up different high- and low-grade material bodies, this karma is his enemy, friend and neutral witness, his spiritual master and controlling lord. Worshiping Govardhana Hill |
| SB 10.24.17 |
A devotee who faithfully engages in the worship of the Deity in the temple but does not behave properly toward other devotees or people in general is called a prÄká¹›ta-bhakta, a materialistic devotee, and is considered to be in the lowest position. Maharaja Nimi Meets the Nine Yogendras |
| SB 11.2.47 |
These four brothers and their family members fully engaged in the service of Lord Caitanya. They knew no other god or goddess. The Trunk, Branches and Subbranches of the Caitanya Tree |
| CC 1.10.11 |
Addressing the girls, the Lord would say, “Worship Me, and I shall give you good husbands or good benedictions. The Ganges and goddess DurgÄ are My maidservants. What to speak of other demigods, even Lord Åšiva is My servant.†Lord Caitanya's Childhood Pastimes |
| CC 1.14.50 |
The Lord told Lakṣmī, “Just worship Me, for I am the Supreme Lord. If you worship Me, certainly you will get the benediction you desire.†Lord Caitanya's Childhood Pastimes |
| CC 1.14.66 |
“Lord Kṛṣṇa has made a firm promise for all time. If one renders service unto Him, Kṛṣṇa correspondingly gives him an equal amount of success in devotional service to the Lord. Talks Between Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Ramananda Raya |
| CC 2.8.90 |
“Your book should describe the characteristics of the bona fide guru and the bona fide disciple. Then, before accepting a spiritual master, one can be assured of the spiritual master’s position. Similarly, the spiritual master can also be assured of the disciple’s position. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, should be described as the worshipable object, and you should describe the bÄ«ja-mantra for the worship of Kṛṣṇa, as well as that for RÄma and for other expansions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Sixty-One Explanations of the Atmarama Verse |
| CC 2.24.330 |
Those who are engaged in the worship of demigods enter into the darkest region of ignorance, and still more so do the worshipers of the impersonal Absolute. Sri Isopanishad |
| Iso 12 |
It is said that one result is obtained by worshiping the supreme cause of all causes and that another result is obtained by worshiping what is not supreme. All this is heard from the undisturbed authorities, who clearly explained it. Sri Isopanishad |
