edhamane -- when it is increasing; gune -- the mode; sattve -- of goodness; devanam -- of the demigods; balam -- the strength; edhate -- increases; asuranam -- of the enemies of the demigods; ca -- and; rajasi -- when the mode of passion increases; tamasi -- when the mode of ignorance increases; uddhava -- O Uddhava; rakshasam -- of the man-eating monsters.

With the increase of the mode of goodness, the strength of the demigods similarly increases. When passion increases, the demoniac become strong. And with the rise of ignorance, O Uddhava, the strength of the most wicked increases.
