श्रीसूत उवाच
इत्युक्तो विष्णुरातेन भगवान् बादरायणिः ।
उवाच चरितं विष्णोर्मत्स्यरूपेण यत् कृतम् ॥४॥

Å›rÄ«-sÅ«ta uvÄca
ity ukto viṣṇu-rÄtena
bhagavÄn bÄdarÄyaṇiḥ
uvÄca caritaá¹ viṣṇor
matsya-rūpeṇa yat kṛtam

 Å›rÄ«-sÅ«taḥ uvÄca - ÅšrÄ« SÅ«ta GosvÄmÄ« said; iti uktaḥ - thus being questioned; viṣṇu-rÄtena - by MahÄrÄja ParÄ«ká¹£it, known as ViṣṇurÄta; bhagavÄn - the most powerful; bÄdarÄyaṇiḥ - the son of VyÄsadeva, Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ«; uvÄca - said; caritam - the pastimes; viṣṇoḥ - of Lord Viṣṇu; matsya-rÅ«peṇa - by Him in the form of a fish; yat - whatever; ká¹›tam - was done.

SÅ«ta GosvÄmÄ« said: When ParÄ«ká¹£it MahÄrÄja thus inquired from Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ«, that most powerful saintly person began describing the pastimes of the Lord’s incarnation as a fish.
