deva-ṛṣi - among the demigods and great saintly persons, including NÄrada Muni; arhatsu - the most venerable and worshipable personalities; vai - indeed; satsu - the great devotees; tatra - there (at the RÄjasÅ«ya-yajña); brahma-Ätma-jÄdiá¹£u - and the sons of Lord BrahmÄ (such as Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanat and SanÄtana); rÄjan - O King; yat - from whom; agra-pÅ«jÄyÄm - the first to be worshiped; mataḥ - decision; pÄtratayÄ - selected as the best person to preside over the RÄjasÅ«ya-yajña; acyutaḥ - Kṛṣṇa.
This is a reference to the RÄjasÅ«ya sacrifice performed by MahÄrÄja Yudhiá¹£á¹hira. In that meeting there was a great turmoil over selecting the best person to be worshiped first. Everyone decided to worship ÅšrÄ« Kṛṣṇa. The only protest came from ÅšiÅ›upÄla, and because of his vehement opposition he was killed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
