स वै वृत्र इति प्रोक्तः पापः परमदारुणः ॥१८॥
yenÄvá¹›tÄ ime lokÄs
tapasÄ tvÄá¹£á¹ra-mÅ«rtinÄ
sa vai vṛtra iti proktaḥ
pÄpaḥ parama-dÄruṇaḥ
yena - by whom; Ävá¹›tÄḥ - covered; ime - all these; lokÄḥ - planets; tapasÄ - by the austerity; tvÄá¹£á¹ra-mÅ«rtinÄ - in the form of the son of Tvaá¹£á¹Ä; saḥ - he; vai - indeed; vá¹›traḥ - Vá¹›tra; iti - thus; proktaḥ - called; pÄpaḥ - personified sin; parama-dÄruṇaḥ - very fearful.
That very fearful demon, who was actually the son of Tvaá¹£á¹Ä, covered all the planetary systems by dint of austerity. Therefore he was named Vá¹›tra, or one who covers everything.
In the Vedas it is said, sa imÄḻ lokÄn Ävṛṇot tad vá¹›trasya vá¹›tratvam: because the demon covered all the planetary systems, his name was Vá¹›trÄsura.
