 tataḥ - from that oá¹kÄra; aká¹£ara - of the different sounds; samÄmnÄyam - the total collection; asá¹›jat - created; bhagavÄn - the powerful demigod; ajaḥ - unborn BrahmÄ; anta-stha - as the semivowels; uá¹£ma - sibilants; svara - vowels; sparÅ›a - and consonant stops; hrasva-dÄ«rgha - in short and long forms; Ädi - and so on; laká¹£aṇam - characterized.

From that oá¹kÄra Lord BrahmÄ created all the sounds of the alphabet — the vowels, consonants, semivowels, sibilants and others — distinguished by such features as long and short measure.
