tayor ekataro hy arthaḥ
praká¹›tiḥ sobhayÄtmikÄ
jñÄnaá¹ tv anyatamo bhÄvaḥ
puruṣaḥ so 'bhidhīyate
tayoḥ - of the two; ekataraḥ - one; hi - indeed; arthaḥ - entity; praká¹›tiḥ - nature; sÄ - she; ubhaya-ÄtmikÄ - consisting of both the subtle causes and their manifest products; jñÄnam - (who possesses) consciousness; tu - and; anyatamaḥ - the other; bhÄvaḥ - entity; puruá¹£aḥ - the living soul; saḥ - he; abhidhÄ«yate - is called.
Of these two categories of manifestation, one is material nature, which embodies both the subtle causes and manifest products of matter. The other is the conscious living entity, designated as the enjoyer.
According to ÅšrÄ«la JÄ«va GosvÄmÄ«, praká¹›ti here refers to the subtle pradhÄna, which later becomes manifest as mahat-tattva.
