itthaá¹ sva-bhá¹›tya-mukhyena
pṛṣṭaḥ sa bhagavÄn hariḥ
prÄ«taḥ ká¹£emÄya martyÄnÄá¹
dharmÄn Äha sanÄtanÄn

 Å›rÄ«-Å›ukaḥ uvÄca - ÅšrÄ« Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« said; ittham - thus; sva-bhá¹›tya-mukhyena - by the best of His devotees; pṛṣṭaḥ - questioned; saḥ - He; bhagavÄn - the Supreme Personality of Godhead; hariḥ - ÅšrÄ« Kṛṣṇa; prÄ«taḥ - being pleased; ká¹£emÄya - for the highest welfare; martyÄnÄm - of all conditioned souls; dharmÄn - religious principles; Äha - spoke; sanÄtanÄn - eternal.

ÅšrÄ« Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« said: ÅšrÄ« Uddhava, the best of devotees, thus inquired from the Lord. Hearing his question, the Personality of Godhead, ÅšrÄ« Kṛṣṇa, was pleased and for the welfare of all conditioned souls spoke those religious principles that are eternal.
