ūṣuḥ sarasvatī-tīre
jalaá¹ prÄÅ›ya yata-vratÄḥ
rajanīṠtÄá¹ mahÄ-bhÄgÄ
nanda-sunandakÄdayaḥ

 Å«á¹£uḥ - they stayed; sarasvatÄ«-tÄ«re - on the bank of the SarasvatÄ«; jalam - water; prÄÅ›ya - subsisting on; yata-vratÄḥ - taking strict vows; rajanÄ«m - the night; tÄm - that; mahÄ-bhÄgÄḥ - the greatly fortunate ones; nanda-sunandaka-Ädayaḥ - Nanda, Sunanda and the others.


Text

Nanda, Sunanda and the other greatly fortunate cowherds spent that night on the bank of the Sarasvatī, strictly observing their vows. They fasted, taking only water.

ÅšrÄ«la ViÅ›vanÄtha CakravartÄ« explains that Sunanda is the younger brother of Nanda MahÄrÄja.
