ataeva Ĺruti kahe, brahma — saviĹeᚣa
'mukhya' chÄá¸i' 'lakᚣaášÄ'te mÄne nirviĹeᚣa
ataeva - therefore; Ĺruti - Vedic mantras; kahe - say; brahma - the Absolute Truth; sa-viĹeᚣa - personal; mukhya - direct meaning; chÄá¸i' - giving up; lakᚣaášÄ'te - by interpretation; mÄne - accept; nirviĹeᚣa - impersonal.
As mentioned above, the ĹvetÄĹvatara Upaniᚣad (3.19) states:
apÄáši-pÄdo javano grahÄŤtÄ
paĹyaty acakᚣuḼ sa Ĺášášoty akarášaḼ
sa vetti vedyaáš na ca tasyÄsti vettÄ
tam Ähur agryaáš puruᚣaáš mahÄntam
This Vedic mantra clearly states, puruᚣaáš mahÄntam. The word puruᚣa means âperson.â In the Bhagavad-gÄŤtÄ (10.12) Arjuna confirms that this person is KášášŁáša when he addresses KášášŁáša as puruᚣaáš ĹÄĹvatam: âYou are the original person.â Thus the puruᚣaáš mahÄntam mentioned in the verse from the ĹvetÄĹvatara Upaniᚣad is ĹrÄŤ KášášŁáša. His hands and legs are not mundane but are completely transcendental. However, when He comes, fools take Him to be an ordinary person (avajÄnanti mÄáš mĹŤá¸hÄ mÄnuᚣčᚠtanum ÄĹritam). One who has no Vedic knowledge, who has not studied the Vedas from a bona fide spiritual master, does not know KášášŁáša. Therefore he is a mĹŤá¸ha. Such fools take KášášŁáša to be an ordinary person (paraáš bhÄvam ajÄnantaḼ). They do not actually know what KášášŁáša is. ManuᚣyÄášÄáš sahasreᚣu kaĹcid yatati siddhaye. It is not possible to understand KášášŁáša simply by studying the Vedas perfectly. One must have the mercy of a devotee (yat-pÄdam). Unless one is favored by a devotee, he cannot understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Arjuna also confirms this in the Bhagavad-gÄŤtÄ (10.14): âMy Lord, it is very difficult to understand Your personality.â The less intelligent class of men cannot understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead without being favored by His devotee. Therefore the Bhagavad-gÄŤtÄ (4.34) contains another injunction:
tad viddhi praášipÄtena paripraĹnena sevayÄ
upadekᚣyanti te jĂąÄnaáš jĂąÄninas tattva-darĹinaḼ
One has to approach a bona fide spiritual master and surrender to him. Only then can one understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead as a person.
