Chapter Summary

Purport
A summary of this chapter is given by ÅšrÄ«la Bhaktivinoda ṬhÄkura in his Amá¹›ta-pravÄha-bhÄá¹£ya. Meeting ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu in a village called RÄmakeli, two brothers, RÅ«pa and SanÄtana, began to devise means to get out of their government service. They appointed some brÄhmaṇas to perform puraÅ›caraṇa ceremonies and chant the holy name of Kṛṣṇa. ÅšrÄ«la RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« deposited ten thousand gold coins with a grocer, and the balance he brought in two boats to a place called BÄklÄ CandradvÄ«pa. There he divided this money among the brÄhmaṇas, Vaiṣṇavas and his relatives, and a portion he kept for emergency measures and personal needs. He was informed that ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu was going to Vá¹›ndÄvana from JagannÄtha PurÄ« through the forest of JhÄrikhaṇá¸a (Jharkhand); therefore he sent two people to JagannÄtha PurÄ« to find out when the Lord would leave for Vá¹›ndÄvana. In this way RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« retired, but SanÄtana GosvÄmÄ« told the Nawab that he was sick and could not attend to his work. Giving this excuse, he sat at home and studied ÅšrÄ«mad-BhÄgavatam with learned brÄhmaṇa scholars. The Nawab Hussain Shah first sent his personal physician to see what the real facts were; then he personally came to see why SanÄtana was not attending to official business. Knowing that he wanted to resign his post, the Nawab had him arrested and imprisoned. The Nawab then went off to attack Orissa. When ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu started for Vá¹›ndÄvana through the forest of JhÄrikhaṇá¸a, RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« left home and sent news to SanÄtana that he was leaving with his younger brother (Anupama Mallika) to meet ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu. ÅšrÄ«la RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« finally reached PrayÄga and met with ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu for ten successive days. During this time, Vallabha Bhaá¹á¹a extended an invitation to the Lord with great respect. ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu introduced ÅšrÄ«la RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« to Vallabha Bhaá¹á¹a. After this, a brÄhmaṇa scholar named Raghupati UpÄdhyÄya arrived and discussed Kṛṣṇa consciousness with the Lord. KavirÄja GosvÄmÄ« then extensively describes the living condition of ÅšrÄ« RÅ«pa and SanÄtana at Vá¹›ndÄvana. During the ten days at PrayÄga, ÅšrÄ«la RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« was instructed by the Lord, who gave him the basic principles of the Bhakti-rasÄmá¹›ta-sindhu. The Lord then sent ÅšrÄ«la RÅ«pa GosvÄmÄ« to Vá¹›ndÄvana. The Lord Himself returned to VÄrÄṇasÄ« and stayed at the home of CandraÅ›ekhara.
