“SvarÅ«pa†is one of the names of a brahmacÄrÄ« in Åšaá¹…karÄcÄrya’s disciplic succession. In the Vedic discipline there are ten names for sannyÄsÄ«s, and it is customary for a brahmacÄrÄ« assisting a sannyÄsÄ« of the designation TÄ«rtha or Āśrama to receive the title SvarÅ«pa. DÄmodara SvarÅ«pa was formerly a resident of NavadvÄ«pa, and his name was Puruá¹£ottama Ä€cÄrya. When he went to VÄrÄṇasÄ«, he took sannyÄsa from a sannyÄsÄ« designated TÄ«rtha. Although he received the title SvarÅ«pa in his brahmacÄrÄ« stage, he did not change his name when he took sannyÄsa. Actually as a sannyÄsÄ« he should have been called TÄ«rtha, but he chose to retain his original brahmacÄrÄ« title of SvarÅ«pa.
