With reference to the Viṣṇu-dharmottara, the Laghu-bhÄgavatÄmá¹›ta explains that RÄma is an incarnation of VÄsudeva, Laká¹£maṇa is an incarnation of Saá¹…kará¹£aṇa, Bharata is an incarnation of Pradyumna, and Åšatrughna is an incarnation of Aniruddha. The Padma PurÄṇa describes that RÄmacandra is NÄrÄyaṇa and that Laká¹£maṇa, Bharata and Åšatrughna are respectively Åšeá¹£a, Cakra and Åšaá¹…kha (the conchshell in the hand of NÄrÄyaṇa). In the RÄma-gÄ«ta of the Skanda PurÄṇa, Laká¹£maṇa, Bharata and Åšatrughna have been described as the triple attendants of Lord RÄma.
