At the end of His twenty-fourth year, at the end of the fortnight of the waxing moon, ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu left NavadvÄ«pa and crossed the river Ganges at a place known as NidayÄra-ghÄá¹a. Then He reached Kaṇá¹aka-nagara, or KÄá¹oyÄ (Katwa), where He accepted ekadaṇá¸a-sannyÄsa according to the Åšaá¹…karite system. Since KeÅ›ava BhÄratÄ« belonged to the Åšaá¹…karite sect, he could not initiate Caitanya MahÄprabhu into the Vaiṣṇava sannyÄsa order, whose members carry the tridaṇá¸a.
CandraÅ›ekhara Ä€cÄrya assisted in the routine ceremonial work of the Lord’s acceptance of sannyÄsa. By the order of ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu, kÄ«rtana was performed for the entire day, and at the end of the day the Lord shaved off His hair. On the next day He became a regular sannyÄsÄ«, with one rod (ekadaṇá¸a). From that day on, His name was ÅšrÄ« Kṛṣṇa Caitanya. Before that, He was known as NimÄi Paṇá¸ita. ÅšrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu, in the sannyÄsa order, traveled all over RÄá¸hadeÅ›a, the region where the Ganges River cannot be seen. KeÅ›ava BhÄratÄ« accompanied Him for some distance.
