नर्मदा भ्रातृभिर्दत्ता पुरुकुत्साय योरगैः ।
तया रसातलं नीतो भुजगेन्द्रप्रयुक्तया ॥२॥

 narmadÄ - by the name NarmadÄ; bhrÄtá¹›bhiḥ - by her brothers; dattÄ - was given in charity; purukutsÄya - unto Purukutsa;  - she who; uragaiḥ - by the serpents (sarpa-gaṇa); tayÄ - by her; rasÄtalam - to the lower region of the universe; nÄ«taḥ - was brought; bhujaga-indra-prayuktayÄ - engaged by VÄsuki, the King of the serpents.

The serpent brothers of NarmadÄ gave NarmadÄ to Purukutsa. Being sent by VÄsuki, she took Purukutsa to the lower region of the universe.

Before describing the descendants of Purukutsa, the son of MÄndhÄtÄ, Åšukadeva GosvÄmÄ« first describes how Purukutsa was married to NarmadÄ, who was induced to take him to the lower region of the universe.
