संवत्सरोऽत्यगात् तावद् यावता नागतो गतः ।
मुनिस्तद्दर्शनाकाङ्क्षो राजाब्भक्षो बभूव ह ॥२३॥

 saá¹vatsaraḥ - one complete year; atyagÄt - passed; tÄvat - as long as; yÄvatÄ - so long; na - not; Ägataḥ - returned; gataḥ - DurvÄsÄ Muni, who had left that place; muniḥ - the great sage; tat-darÅ›ana-ÄkÄá¹…ká¹£aḥ - desiring to see him again; rÄjÄ - the King; ap-bhaká¹£aḥ - taking only water; babhÅ«va - remained; ha - indeed.

DurvÄsÄ Muni had left the place of MahÄrÄja AmbarÄ«á¹£a, and as long as he had not returned — for one complete year — the King had fasted, maintaining himself simply by drinking water.
