Chapter 22: The Descendants of Ajamidha. Text 12-13

देवापिः शान्तनुस्तस्य बाह्लीक इति चात्मजाः।
पितृराज्यं परित्यज्य देवापिस्तु वनं गतः ॥१२॥
अभवच्छान्तनू राजा प्राङ्महाभिषसंज्ञितः।
यं यं कराभ्यां स्पृशति जीर्णं यौवनमेति सः ॥१३॥

devÄpiḥ Å›Äntanus tasya
bÄhlÄ«ka iti cÄtmajÄḥ
pitá¹›-rÄjyaá¹ parityajya
devÄpis tu vanaá¹ gataḥ
abhavac chÄntanÅ« rÄjÄ
prÄá¹… mahÄbhiá¹£a-saá¹jñitaḥ
yaá¹ yaá¹ karÄbhyÄá¹ spṛśati
jīrṇaṠyauvanam eti saḥ

 devÄpiḥ - DevÄpi; Å›Äntanuḥ - ÅšÄntanu; tasya - of him (PratÄ«pa); bÄhlÄ«kaḥ - BÄhlÄ«ka; iti - thus; ca - also; Ätma-jÄḥ - the sons; pitá¹›-rÄjyam - the father's property, the kingdom; parityajya - rejecting; devÄpiḥ - DevÄpi, the eldest; tu - indeed; vanam - to the forest; gataḥ - left; abhavat - was; Å›Äntanuḥ - ÅšÄntanu; rÄjÄ - the king; prÄk - before; mahÄbhiá¹£a - MahÄbhiá¹£a; saá¹jñitaḥ - most celebrated; yam yam - whomever; karÄbhyÄm - with his hands; spṛśati - touched; jÄ«rṇam - although very old; yauvanam - youth; eti - attained; saḥ - he.


Text

The sons of PratÄ«pa were DevÄpi, ÅšÄntanu and BÄhlÄ«ka. DevÄpi left the kingdom of his father and went to the forest, and therefore ÅšÄntanu became the king. ÅšÄntanu, who in his previous birth was known as MahÄbhiá¹£a, had the ability to transform anyone from old age to youth simply by touching that person with his hands.
