Å›amo damas tapaḥ Å›aucaá¹
santoá¹£aḥ ká¹£Äntir Ärjavam
jñÄnaá¹ dayÄcyutÄtmatvaá¹
satyaṠca brahma-lakṣaṇam
Å›amaḥ - control of the mind; damaḥ - control of the senses; tapaḥ - austerity and penance; Å›aucam - cleanliness; santoá¹£aḥ - satisfaction; ká¹£Äntiḥ - forgiveness (being unagitated by anger); Ärjavam - simplicity; jñÄnam - knowledge; dayÄ - mercy; acyuta-Ätmatvam - accepting oneself as an eternal servant of the Lord; satyam - truthfulness; ca - also; brahma-laká¹£aṇam - the symptoms of a brÄhmaṇa.
In the institution of varṇÄÅ›rama-dharma, the symptoms of a brÄhmaṇa, ká¹£atriya, vaiÅ›ya, śūdra, brahmacÄrÄ«, gá¹›hastha, vÄnaprastha, and sannyÄsÄ« are all described. The ultimate aim is acyutÄtmatvam — to think always of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, or Viṣṇu. To make advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one has to become a brÄhmaṇa, with the above-mentioned symptoms.
