सूत उवाच
एवमाभाषितः पृष्टः स राज्ञा श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ।
प्रत्यभाषत धर्मज्ञो भगवान्बादरायणिः ॥४०॥

evam ÄbhÄá¹£itaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ
sa rÄjÃ±Ä Å›lakṣṇayÄ girÄ
pratyabhÄá¹£ata dharma-jño
bhagavÄn bÄdarÄyaṇiḥ

 sÅ«taḥ uvÄca - ÅšrÄ« SÅ«ta GosvÄmÄ« said; evam - thus; ÄbhÄá¹£itaḥ - being spoken; pṛṣṭaḥ - and asked for; saḥ - he; rÄjÃ±Ä - by the King; Å›lakṣṇayÄ - by sweet; girÄ - language; pratyabhÄá¹£ata - began to reply; dharma-jñaḥ - one who knows the principles of religion; bhagavÄn - the powerful personality; bÄdarÄyaṇiḥ - son of VyÄsadeva.

ÅšrÄ« SÅ«ta GosvÄmÄ« said: The King thus spoke and questioned the sage, using sweet language. Then the great and powerful personality, the son of VyÄsadeva, who knew the principles of religion, began his reply.
