Text

When Lord Caitanya MahÄprabhu was a student, He asked whomever He met to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahÄ-mantra. In this way He inundated the whole town of NavadvÄ«pa with the chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Purport

The present NavadvÄ«pa-dhÄma is but a part of the whole of NavadvÄ«pa. NavadvÄ«pa means “nine islands.†These nine islands, which occupy an area of land estimated at thirty-two square miles, are surrounded by different branches of the Ganges. In all nine of those islands of the NavadvÄ«pa area there are different places for cultivating devotional service. It is stated in ÅšrÄ«mad-BhÄgavatam (7.5.23) that there are nava-vidha bhakti, nine different activities of devotional service:

Å›ravaṇaá¹ kÄ«rtanaá¹ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaá¹ pÄda-sevanam
arcanaá¹ vandanaá¹ dÄsyaá¹ sakhyam Ätma-nivedanam

There are different islands in the NavadvÄ«pa area for cultivation of these nine varieties of devotional service. They are as follows: (1) AntardvÄ«pa, (2) SÄ«mantadvÄ«pa, (3) GodrumadvÄ«pa, (4) MadhyadvÄ«pa, (5) KoladvÄ«pa, (6) ṚtudvÄ«pa, (7) JahnudvÄ«pa, (8) Modadruma-dvÄ«pa and (9) RudradvÄ«pa. According to the settlement map, our ISKCON NavadvÄ«pa center is situated on the RudradvÄ«pa island. Below RudradvÄ«pa, in AntardvÄ«pa, is MÄyÄpur. There ÅšrÄ« JagannÄtha MiÅ›ra, the father of Caitanya MahÄprabhu, used to reside. In all these different islands, Lord Caitanya MahÄprabhu, as a young man, used to lead His saá¹…kÄ«rtana party. He thus inundated the entire area with the waves of love of Kṛṣṇa.
